Favicon FAQ
Which favicon files does my website need?
Four files cover almost every browser and device: favicon.ico for older browsers and tools that look for /favicon.ico, favicon.svg for modern browsers, a 180x180 apple-touch-icon.png for iPhone and iPad home screens, and a web manifest with 192x192 and 512x512 icons for Android and installable web apps. This favicon generator makes all of them in one zip.
Should I use favicon.ico or favicon.svg?
Use both. Modern browsers pick the SVG, which stays sharp at any size. The ICO file is the fallback for older browsers, RSS readers and other tools that still request /favicon.ico directly.
Can I convert an SVG to a favicon?
Yes. Drop your SVG in and every size is drawn straight from the vector, so even the 16x16 icon is crisp. You also get a favicon.svg that includes your padding and background settings.
Can I make an ICO file from a PNG or JPG?
Yes. This works as an ICO generator for PNG, JPG and WebP images. The favicon.ico it creates holds 16x16, 32x32 and 48x48 versions. Start from an image that is at least 512x512 for the sharpest result.
Why does the Apple touch icon have a white background?
iPhones and iPads fill transparent areas of a home screen icon with black. To avoid that, the 180x180 apple-touch-icon.png always gets a solid background: your chosen color, or white if you picked transparent. iOS rounds the corners for you.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The favicon maker runs entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your computer, and the zip file is built on your device.
